About this program
Ak Lu'um Waldorf Community is an innovative Waldorf school located 8 kilometers north of Playa del Carmen in the Riviera Maya, Mexico. Founded in 2006 by Siobhan Bowers and Gabriela Núñez, the school began with just five children in a house outside the city and has grown into a thriving educational community. The school operates as a non-profit organization committed to providing holistic, quality education to all families regardless of academic ability, financial capacity, or cultural background. In 2008, Ak Lu'um inaugurated its first sustainable campus in the jungle, powered entirely by solar energy. In 2018, the community acquired a new permanent campus in Sac Hua Cax, featuring ecologically-conscious construction using traditional regional materials, techniques, and designs. The school generates its own water and energy resources, separates and recycles waste, and maintains continuous organic composting—all in harmony with the surrounding jungle environment.
