About this program
Star Child Nature School is Burlington County's first and only fully outdoor environmental program, located on a 42-acre tree farm in Hainesport, New Jersey. The school offers nature-based education for children from walking age through ten years old, operating entirely outdoors in all seasons and weather conditions. Founded on the philosophy that children need freedom to move, explore, discover, and play to develop their physical bodies and build a strong foundation for future emotional and cognitive learning, Star Child embraces the forest school model pioneered by Cedarsong in Washington. The program emphasizes nature immersion, child-led learning, and teachers as mentors who model curiosity and engagement. The school's main goal is to embrace childhood by fostering curiosity, compassion, creativity, and confidence through predominantly outdoor experiences. What sets Star Child apart is its commitment to year-round outdoor learning across all weather conditions—rain, snow, and sunshine. The natural setting provides ever-changing sensory experiences that develop all eight senses, including vestibular, proprioceptive, and interoceptive systems. Children build relationships with native insects and wildlife, participate in purposeful activities like gardening and composting, and learn through multi-sensory, open-ended experiences free from judgment.
