About this program
Summerhill School is the original democratic free school, founded in 1921 by A.S. Neill in Suffolk, England. For over a century, Summerhill has championed children's freedom and self-governance, operating on the principle that children learn best when they are free to make their own decisions about their education. The school is famous for its democratic structure where students and staff have equal votes in the weekly School Meeting that governs community life. Lessons are optional, allowing children to play, explore, and pursue their interests until they are ready to engage with formal learning on their own terms.
