About this program
Sunbeam Nature School is a cooperative, play-based, and inquiry-driven program situated on a two-acre working farm in Petaluma, California. The school integrates regenerative agricultural practices and hands-on outdoor experiences with a strong respect for children’s voices, autonomy, and connection to the land. Founded in 2020 by Shawna Thompson, an experienced educator inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy and emergent curriculum, Sunbeam aims to create a nurturing, healing, and joyful environment for families seeking alternative education. Children and families are offered the opportunity to fully engage with the rhythms of nature, farm life, and community care. From seasonal gardening and animal stewardship to artistic projects and farm stand entrepreneurship, Sunbeam celebrates learning as a process rooted in both play and meaningful engagement with the world. Families are encouraged to visit the campus, tour the facilities, and experience the Sunbeam approach firsthand. (Source: sunbeamnatureschool.org)
