About this program
Ellis Hollow Nature School (EHNS) is a play-based, indoor/outdoor hybrid program located on the grounds of Ellis Hollow Community Center in Ithaca, New York. Since 1953, the school has provided a loving, engaging environment where children learn through meaningful exploration in both forest and indoor classrooms. The program operates as a modernized cooperative, with parents sharing administrative and maintenance duties without the demanding on-site participation requirements of traditional cooperatives. What makes EHNS unique is its dual-environment approach. The outdoor forest classroom, created in 2020 by teachers and students, features a circle time area, mud kitchen, climbing structures, swings, hammocks, art spaces, and a fire pit. This is complemented by a cozy indoor classroom with dedicated areas for reading, imaginary play, building, art, and cooking. Classes run Monday through Thursday from 8:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., offering families flexibility with both 3-day and 4-day enrollment options. The school's philosophy centers on intrinsic curiosity, believing children learn best when following their own interests in engaging, child-centered spaces.
