About this program
Heart Rock Forest School is an outdoor nature-based education program serving the Pasadena, California area. Founded by Marie Harper, a certified Outdoor Classroom Project Specialist with dual Masters degrees in Human Development and Early Childhood Studies, the school addresses nature deficiency in children's development by making outdoor settings their primary classroom. The program's mission centers on helping children absorb the health, cognitive, and social benefits of nature while empowering them to feel connected to their community and protective of their world. Heart Rock infuses academic learning through exploration and non-rigorous routines, employing caring educators with dual experience in natural sciences and social-emotional development. At the core of everything is love—love of the outdoors, of self, of others, and of learning—creating an environment where respect, diversity, and mindful action are valued.
