About this program
The Madison School Forest, managed by Madison School & Community Recreation (MSCR) in partnership with the Madison Metropolitan School District, is a unique outdoor space encompassing 305 acres in the Driftless Area southwest of Verona, Wisconsin. This property showcases a remarkable blend of natural features, from ravines and sandstone cliffs to diverse forest habitats. It includes the Olson Oak Wood State Natural Area, noted for its dry southern oak forest, and the Jerome Jones Pine Plantation planted by local school staff and students. The forest is recognized as part of Wisconsin’s statewide School Forest Program. Most of the forest is open to the public and accessible from a small gravel lot at 1680 Fritz Rd, inviting families to explore its trails and observe its natural beauty.
