About this program
The Outdoor Academy is a fully-accredited boarding semester school for high schoolers, nestled in the heart of North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains in Pisgah Forest. As part of the Eagle's Nest Foundation, OA offers transformative educational experiences that prepare students not just for college, but for life. The program is built upon four cornerstones: intellect, craft, environment, and community. This dynamic, honors-level curriculum integrates wilderness experiences, environmental education, and creative arts into a cohesive learning experience. Classes are small and personal, with academic teachers who also serve as wood carvers and rock-climbing experts. What makes OA distinctive is its place-based approach to education. Students don't just study their environment—they live in it, developing a deeper connection with nature while building essential life skills. The immersive 4-month experience creates lifelong friendships and equips students with confidence, leadership abilities, and a cultivated love of learning.
