About this program
Bosque Escola Avelãs (BEA) was created to help children and families reconnect with nature, reducing the 'nature deficit' that can come from modern living. At BEA, nature is seen as a teacher—children observe, experiment, and learn through a respectful and curious relationship with their surroundings. The project values the individuality and active participation of every child, emphasizing direct experience and holistic engagement with learning. The bond between child and carer is central, ensuring close support tailored to each child's unique process. BEA also integrates values that transcend the material world, encouraging new ways of perceiving and understanding life. BEA's learning environment combines a natural forest setting with a farm space, guided by permaculture principles: caring for the land, for people, and for the future. The school dreams of being free and accessible to all, continuously shaping itself by and for its community.
