About this program
The High Mountain Institute (HMI) offers transformative semester, summer, and gap programs that unite academics, outdoor adventure, and strong community living. Located at 9,600 feet above sea level in Leadville, Colorado, HMI’s 80-acre campus sits on the edge of the White River National Forest and provides an inspirational setting, including expeditions from the Rocky Mountains to Patagonia. Since 1998, HMI has helped prepare adolescents and young adults to take risks, foster leadership, engage with diverse perspectives, and develop practical skills that transfer beyond the classroom. All students live on campus or travel together during their program, immersing in rigorous intellectual inquiry, experiential learning, and wilderness expeditions. HMI integrates nature and academics, focusing on process-based learning that teaches students how to think and encourages a passion for learning.
