About this program
Slöyd Experience is a unique nonprofit organization based in Louisville, Colorado, dedicated to providing authentic educational woodworking experiences to youth. The program revives the historical Scandinavian method of Slöyd education, which uses woodworking as a vehicle for developing character in children. Founded on principles established by Otto Salomon, who famously stated that Slöyd "supplies an educational value not furnished by the subjects usually taught in schools," the organization brings this time-tested methodology to modern American communities. The program is backed by university research partners and endorsed by educational professionals. As a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Slöyd Experience aims to make this enriching educational approach accessible to communities across the country, helping children develop essential life skills through hands-on craftsmanship.
